The Lake District has been drawn and painted for two hundred and fifty years, since the first tourists came with Claude glasses to look at it backwards. Our thirty-odd designs pick the views that still stop people: a packhorse bridge with a lake behind it, a boathouse at sunset, a market town with fells at the end of every street.
Keswick and Derwentwater
Keswick is the northern Lakes' town, with the Moot Hall in the middle of the market square and Skiddaw filling the sky behind it. Ten minutes' walk brings you to Derwentwater and the launch piers; ten minutes' drive brings you to Ashness Bridge, the packhorse bridge on the Watendlath road with the lake and Skiddaw framed beyond it, which is the most-drawn view in the northern Lakes and one of ours.
Buttermere
Over Honister or round by Newlands, Buttermere is the small lake with the big fells: Haystacks, where Wainwright's ashes were scattered, Fleetwith Pike and High Stile. The path round the lake is flat and takes two hours. Our two designs are the lake from the Honister road at sunset and the shore path under the pines.
Grasmere
Grasmere is Wordsworth's village, with Dove Cottage at one end and the gingerbread shop by the churchyard where he is buried. The lake sits just south of the village below Loughrigg. We drew a café on the way into the village and the lake below the fells in autumn.
Windermere and Bowness
Windermere is the big lake, eleven miles long, with Bowness's piers and steamers halfway down and Ambleside at the top. Our designs are the lake from the wooded shore above Bowness, the marina at dusk, and a jetty running out into still water with the fells beyond.
Ullswater and Cartmel
Ullswater is the one Wordsworth's daffodils grew beside, at Glencoyne Bay, and the one with the steamers from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge and Aira Force waterfall halfway along. Cartmel, at the southern edge, is the priory village that gave the world sticky toffee pudding.
